Last year, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized more counterfeit items that pose health and safety risks than ever before. Counterfeit test and measurement tools can be especially dangerous because they are typically low quality and can cause injuries.
When you’re dealing with electrical safety, quality is important because it could be what stands between you and electric shock. With fake products, it’s hard to know for sure if they’ve been tested and even pass standards such as IEC. According to the NFPA, nearly 2,000 U.S. workplace injuries are caused by electrical hazards each year; taking a chance on your test tools or accessories isn’t worth it.

Counterfeit products may be branded with the Fluke name or logo and appear to be legitimate products. They may not meet the necessary safety and quality that you need and expect with test tools and accessories. Using fake products can not only produce unreliable readings and can even lead to unplanned incidents from electric shocks and increase the possibility of arc faults caused by inadequate insulation or design.
Fake test leads and clips are often made from inadequate wire, polymers and terminal components and use dubious construction methods that may lead to premature failure and intermittency. They may not provide adequate or durable insulation to prevent electric shock due to leakage current, impact or wear. Knock off test leads may lead to intermittent readings, overheating and pose a serious risk of arc flash or shock hazard if used for measurements in commercial or industrial electrical installations.
Test leads and clips made from improperly selected or poor-quality materials can also affect the readings recorded on a digital multimeter. For example, if dissimilar metals were used in the manufacture of the test leads, they can produce errors that are very difficult to trace if you are trying to measure very low voltage (e.g. in the mV range) or very low resistance, such as when working on low voltage electronic circuits. The contact between dissimilar metals can act like a thermocouple and generate its own voltage.

I found a site online that is offering a great price on a Fluke tool or accessory. How can I tell if they are authentic?
Be sure the test tool or accessory is being sold by an authorized Fluke distributor. Please check our Where to Buy page for a list of authorized Fluke distributors.
If the listed price is too low compared to what you can find from authorized distributors, this could be an indication that you may be looking at counterfeit Fluke test tools or accessories.
Counterfeit products vary in quality, both visually and their internal components. From a visual perspective, look for flimsy packaging, grammatical and spelling errors, flawed fonts, incorrect colors, old copyright dates, and shading on photographs. Also, be aware of where the product was purchased. Be cautious of fake websites (look at the URL), a failure to list contact details and unrealistic discounts.

- Link/s where purchased or spotted online
- Physical address if you bought or saw the products in store
- Seller name and any return address on the shipment and/or receipts
- Date purchased
Fluke cannot repair or replace counterfeit products. Reach out directly to the Marketplace you purchased the product through. You can also search for “[list marketplace] report counterfeits” and that search should show where to report for each marketplace.
